Lisbon is situated at the most south western point of Europe. During its 3,000 years of history, it suffered several earth quakes, fires and pandemic diseases and was often severely destructed. With this in mind, it’s even more impressive to see the well-preserved old town from the Middle Ages. You can find flagstone facades, small alleys, old trams and lovely cafés which invite you to come in. Please don’t try to resist the temptation and test some of the local sweet delicacies. They are yummy! If you are rather looking for some savoury local food, then taste the national dish stock fish. However, regardless of the delicious food, the capital city of Portugal has much more to offer: Let’s go sightseeing. The main landmarks are the warrior tower “Torre de Belém” and the memorial Padrão dos Descobrimentos, which was built in honour of all the sailors and Portugal as a nation of sailors. Both are located on the riverside, from where you can see the impressive Christo Rei Statue on the other side of the river. It looks like Christ blessing Lisbon with arms out-stretched, very similar to the famous Christo Redentor Statue in Rio de Janeiro. So, if you have time, catch a boat, cross over and take a closer look at the statue. You will certainly be rewarded with a stunning view over the city as well. Additional sights that you should not miss during your visit are the Castelo de São Jorge, as well as the biggest park in the city Parque Florestal de Monsanto and the museum of national art Museo Nacional de Arte Antiga.

You are wondering how to get to Lisbon? Take the coach! Bus operators such as Rede Expressos and Aerobus offer several trips a day from Porto, Lagos and Faro to the harbour city. Most buses stop at Lisbon – Sete Rios. The station is located in the city centre and is thus perfect for a direct start of your discovery tour.
