Nuremberg, February 20, 2018 - While train prices remain quite expensive, especially after this year’s price increase, the cost of flying is getting closer to the fare of a bus ticket in the United Kingdom. Travelling by bus and plane is currently cheaper than ever. Companies, such as Ryanair and megabus UK have been offering extremely competitive prices. On longer distance routes, airlines can even beat out the bus in terms of affordability.

In a study, the international coach comparison portal CheckMyBus has analysed the prices for bus and plane tickets for twenty national and twenty international connections. The trips have been booked roughly four weeks in advance to find surprisingly low prices with both means of transport.

Flying is becoming increasingly more affordable: on national routes, airplanes lure many with tickets as low as £24.99, which is only slightly more expensive than equivalent intercity coaches for a fraction of the travel time. On selected domestic routes, and many connections to major international cities, airline tickets between £10 and £30 are available on weekdays. Routes between Nuremberg and Manchester, and between London and Berlin are particularly cheap and can often be found for as low as £9.99.

Domestic Bus and Flight Price Comparisons

Ryanair and megabus Drive Prices Down

Amidst recent price increases, British trains are among the most expensive in Europe, often outpricing buses as well as many domestic and international flights. Several domestic flights are priced only about £10-15 more than some of the cheapest buses. On the Nottingham-Edinburgh route, for example, while train tickets start from £62.50, a long-distance bus will cost approximately £14.30 while a shorter flight would cost £29.99 with Ryanair. Alternatively, bus prices can be less than half the cost of travelling by train. Megabus offers some of the cheapest fares around and even offers special £1.00 deals for long-distance travel. National Express however, is still the market leader of the UK, having the most extensive coach network in the country.

International Bus and Flight Price Comparisons

Low-cost airlines connect Europe with Low Prices

However, airplanes are even faster, and can surprisingly be more affordable, particularly for international travel. This is especially for those who are flexible in terms of departure and arrival times and can travel on weekdays. For such flight connections, the prices are currently on par or even cheaper than some long-distance buses. Flight operators, such as Ryainair, offer extremely affordable connections to destinations throughout Europe.
