Located at the foot of the Alpes, Grenoble is one of France’s most well-known winter sports resorts. One of the most famous landmarks of the capital of the department of Isère is the Bastille, medieval fortifications on top of a close-by mountain. The fortress can be reached with the Grenoble-Bastille Cable-Car and its characteristic egg-shaped cabins known to locals as “Les Bulles” (the bubbles). The city was chosen to host the Olympic Games in 1968 and the Olympic Village can still be visited today. The city of Grenoble itself is known for its intriguing mixture of architectural styles ranging from the historic quarter Notre-Dame, the Palace of the Parliament of Dauphiné and the Fountain of the Three Orders to modern buildings such as the Perret Tower, the Polygone Scientifique and the Centre Alpexpo. For refreshments a stop at “La Table Ronde”, the oldest café in town, is highly recommended. There you can try some local herb liquor called “génépi” or “chartreuse” and taste regional specialties including “gratin dauphinoise” (potato gratin).

Many French cities but also some in Switzerland and Italy are connected to Grenoble by bus, which makes the city easy to reach for visitors. Coach companies including Aerocar, FlixBus, isilines and OUIBUS usually stop at one of three bus terminals: Grenoble station,Grenoble central station and Grenoble Presqu’île.
